Long Narrow House Design in Wood

This long narrow house design by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects really brings nature home. Apart from its lush redwood forest setting in Sebastopol, California, the natural design features a wood facade framing massive windows that invite the outdoors in. Topped by a metal roof, the narrow wood frame is clad in rich cedar siding, with two Douglas fir decks at each end of this very long house which allow for casual outdoor entertaining areas amid the trees. Interiors open onto these outdoor spaces seamlessly. Inside the organic 1,700-sq.-ft. forest home, an open concept house plan creates a sense of openness which is enhanced by the vast windows and natural light.

Summer Cabin Design - Award-winning Wood House

Stockholm, Sweden-based architecture firm WRB designed this easy, breezy summer cabin on the archipelago of Trosa with a stunning seaside view. The recipient of the Swedish Wood Award in 2000, this timber home design features exterior walls with slats, which allow residents to experience the great outdoors while plenty of natural light permeates every inch of the home. The wood cabin design is divided into zones, the use of which depends on the weather. The main living areas are well insulated and heated during the winter months for a cozy and comfortable socializing space, while an adjoining veranda and hallway are glass walled, and heated only by the sun to provide an al fresco environment during the warmer months of the year.

Rustic Cabin Design - A Place to "Play"

This rustic cabin design was built by Piet Hein Eek for friend, client and musician Hans Liberg who needed an inspiring and cultivating place to "play." There isn’t a whole lot to this simple, wood cabin design. Surrounded by forest, this timber house’s facade is characterized by cross-sections of stacked logs. A row of window clerestory windows features top-hinged, horizontally swinging shades that flood interiors with natural light. Inside, this compact cottage design contains the one thing this nature dweller needed for survival – a recording studio! And if ever Liberg needs some new inspiration for his melodious compositions, this modern mobile home goes where the music takes him thanks to integrated wheels on the bottom.
